About Manizales
Manizales, Colombia is the capital of the department (state) of Caldas and is located in the heart of Colombia´s world famous coffee zone. Manizales is Colombia´s most beautiful and safest city. The city is at an elevation of about 7,500 feet above sea level so it is generally cool with almost no humidity. It can get chilly at night and it rains quite a bit so we recommend warmer clothes and rain resistant jackets.
The city is relatively compact (it only takes 30 minutes by car to go from one end of the city to the other) yet it has over 400,000 residents and is considered a ¨collegetown¨ with 11 universities including highly ranked Schools of Law and Medicine. The city is very clean with modern housing (mostly high rise apartments). There are 3 big super modern shopping centers with great food courts, fabulous movie theaters and shops. Milan and Cable Plaza area are very popular with lots of restaurants, nightlife and shops.
Getting Here
Manizales has a small airport with many daily flights from Bogota and Medellin. It is usually a little more expensive to fly into Manizales and the airport often closes for short periods of time due to weather. But it is very convenient.
The alternative is to fly into newly remodeled Matecaña International Airport in Pereira, about 1 hour drive from Manizales. There is a $100 fee for Pereira airport pick up and return.
